Breast Pain

Breast Pain

Breast pain is very common and perhaps all women have it at some time or another. Mastalgia is a condition which leads to the pains in the breasts and it should be diagnosed properly. Breast pain is a common problem in younger women who are still having periods (menstrual cycles). Cyclical mastalgia is pain in the breast which varies in association with the menstrual cycle. Non-cyclical mastalgia is pain in the breast which follows no pattern or is intermittent. Breast pain is classified into three types, depending on the age, frequency and location at which it occurs. The three types are cyclic, non-cyclic, and extra mammary type.

Cyclic breast pain is the most common type of breast pain, accounting for about two-thirds of cases. Cyclic breast pain is more common in younger women. The exact cause of cyclical breast pain is unknown. Cyclic breast pain is thought to be caused by the changes in the hormonal levels which affect women during the monthly menstrual cycle.

Non-cyclical breast pain is fairly uncommon, feels different than cyclical mastalgia, and does not vary with the menstrual cycle. This type of breast pain is often more difficult to treat, but in many cases it does tend to improve with time. Non-cyclic breast pain is characterized by a burning or sore kind of pain. One cause of noncyclical breast pain is trauma, injury, or a blow to the breast.

Extramammary breast pain feels like it originates in the breast, but its source is actually somewhere else. The extramammary type of breast pain occurs when breast pain is felt as the reflex pain of some chest pain or muscle pain in the chest wall.

Although the exact cause of breast pain is difficult to determine in most cases, although there are a number of theories as to what causes pain or tenderness in your breasts. Breast pain is very common during and throughout a pregnancy. Frequently, breast pain is associated with the intake of certain anti-depressants. Also, breast pain is often associated with mood swings, work stress, etc. Breast pain is experienced by 6% of silicone implant patients and 16% of saline implant patients. Lastly, breast pain is a known side effect from birth control pills.

Although breast pain can cause a lot of anxiety in women who fear that their pain may be due to breast cancer, breast pain is not usually an early symptom of breast cancer. Simply having breast pain is not a normal sign of breast cancer. Most breast pain is not caused by cancer, but some breast cancers do cause pain, so if you are worried, see your physician.
